Book of the Month- Are You there Vodka, It's Me Chelsea

Are you There Vodka, It's Me Chelsea by Chelsea Handler

From the very first paragraph, Handler's comedic delivery is histerically inappropriate. I actually read this book in its full entirety one day after school in a local bookstore, then proceeded to purchase copies of it as presents for upcoming birthdays. Handler's world is so unlike ours- her representation of her youthful persona seems both promiscuous and innocent, and she throws around sexual scenarios that are reminiscent of a twenty year old, even if she's only 9 at the time. Her stories are witty, and her diction and phrasing are so dynamic that it further expands on her humor.

A collection of anecdotes from her life that are both bizarre and interesting, Chelsea Handler's sophmore novel left me in tears. I have never read a funnier book in my life, nor do I think one exists. Stories range from her brief stint in jail, to her fascination with squeezing little people, to a 'honeymoon' with her father; Handler is both the main character and narrator in her own life's story. She is perhaps one of the most inventive comediennes (read her first reaction to a penis, or the incident with the dog, the Musim man and the peanut butter) and you'll gain a glimpse into a mind of a comic genius. Her stories are so good one doesn't care whether they're real or not.

It is a book for both fans and foes, and impossibly hard to put down.
